HIDDEN EYE FOCUS SERIES with NINJATO! (shhhhhh....)
You know, it's not everyday that you can reveal something as hidden as what may already be in plain view. ????
Sure tricky, but not so tricky says I. On my continued journey, I happened to link with a very secretive warrior and a very secretive record label. Through this unseen connection I was introduced to the world of one audio ninja, NINJATO. As far as ninjas go, he's got all of the credentials to fit. We have yet to spar in a test of skills, BUT I think it is in our future. To submit a "style" would be a travesty. Why? NINJATO's style seems deeply derived from what drives us all; good music. Thus no-style is all style. ????
Look it gets even more confusing, the more I try to explain. Why not let the music and the warrior himself explain. I give you NINJATO. Sip it in like hot Sake. .. ..... .
12:51: Introduction, any background information you would like to share.
NINJATO: I’m Ninjato, making beats for 10 years now. My first Ninjato EP “Chronicles Of The 6 Samurai” is out since 8 November 2012 on limited white vinyl (+ digital on bandcamp, itunes, ..).
*(I FREAKING LOVE THIS JOINT! HIIIIYYYYAAAAHHHHH
-12:51)
12:51: Speaking of Samurai, as a producer, are you personally, constantly refining one killer technique or are you from the open school, where all techniques are for the taking and to be used freely?
NINJATO: I’m not solely focused on one technique. Through my music-making-years I’ve learned to be open to different techniques; learning from others, experimenting on my own. But I’m definitely always refining my sound and making it my own unique sound.
12:51: If you could be a ninja or a samurai, which weapon would you choose to specialize in and why?
NINJATO: The ninjato (short ninja-sword) of course, and also the nunchaku, & the blowpipe. Slicing people with my sharp ninjato-beats, blowing them away with my melodies, making them dizzy with my nunchakus…. Kicking them into their faces with my weird moves… ☺
*(This is how I envision a NINJATO audio beatdown to go...HHIIIYYYYAAAHHH)
12:51: Do you feel the evolution of technology is helping or hurting your art form? (Example: more technology could mean more producers and more competition for music sales)
NINJATO: A little bit of both I guess… Because of technology you can use all kinds off instruments and effects while using just one program and you can easily combine different programs. But an overload on options can make your music sometimes less pure I think. Having less options can stimulate your creativity I’ve learned… (check the first track on my album, made with one synth: dokuganryu)
Technology makes it possible for more people to create whatever they want and to express themselves, which is a good thing, of course. All these people producing their own thing brings A LOT of new music out there. So there’s a lot happening and moving, almost every week there’s a new hype. There’s very good music out there, but as well a lot of crap. It’s hard to find out what you really like in our post-modern music-jungle nowadays.
12:51: What does Caoutchou mean to you?
NINJATO: - Spreading good music, new music to people - Talking, thinking, obsessing about music with good friends - Bringing future beats to Ghent… and the world!! ☺
12:51: This past year, what was your best show experience?
NINJATO: - Gig in Ancienne Belgique with Shabazz Palaces. Great opportunity in the most progressive concert hall of Belgium. - Caoutchou Eastern Rubber Tour to Berlin, Prague & Wroclaw. Crazy underground gigs… - Burnout-festival: a lot of people and great festival-weather.
12:51: Closing statements, words of wisdom, advice.
NINJATO: Just one advice: buy my album!!! ☺
12:51: Your favorite ninja or martial arts movie that pushes your musical inspiration.
NINJATO: Zatoichi (new movie and old series) always does the trick.
12:51: Your favorite snack paired with your favorite album (example: chocolate ice cream and Michael Jackson off the wall)
NINJATO: Thai take-out food and Aphex Twin, Richard D. James Album!!!!
*(That is great right there! Zatoichi, Thai food, AND Aphex Twin. No wonder I like NINJATO'S music so much! If you have no idea about any of those three things you better go get on it, you're missing out!-12:51)
